New Dialogues
Exhibition with Paul Aburrow, Craft Queensland Gallery, Fortitude Valley, 2006.
Laser-cut polypropylene.
Bendigo-based ceramic artist Paul Aburrow and contemporary visual artist Mandy Ridley from Brisbane share a family history, they are first cousins. The family culture of doing and making has evolved for both artists into careers in the arts. A common family interest in nature and the world around them has also been very much a part of their individual arts practices.
In these recent works both of the artists explore their individual responses to the landscape and natural forms.
“Freesias are my favourite flower. I love their beautiful colours, elegant shapes and fragrance. This project has enabled me to translate these responses into a physical form. Industry-based technologies have allowed an expression of the drawn line in laser cut polypropylene, an exciting innovation! Central to my ongoing practice is a work methodology which relies on forging relationships, and allowing many individuals to contribute their particular skills and experience.” – Mandy Ridley
