Mythopoetic is an extensive exhibition shown across three venues at the Griffith University Queensland College of Art and is the visual arts component of the Encounters: India festival that is taking over South Bank from May 13 to 19.

Bringing together the work of 15 women artists from Australia and India, Mythopoetic surveys the ways contemporary artists are re-picturing, re-contextualizing and re-imaging the feminine. The resulting collection reflects the stories, histories and images that create a new mythology formed by artists’ expressions which challenge and transform assumptions and representations of the physical body, gendered subjectivity and sexuality.

The exhibition is curated by emerging artist and curator Marnie Dean, and includes the work of Pushpamala N., Sonia Khurana, Shambhavi Singh, Dhruvi Acharya (India) and Fiona Hall, Simone Eisler, Patt Hoffie, Kate Beynon, Laini Burton and Sangeeta Sandrasegar (Australia).

Encounters: India features an array of cultural events including traditional music, Bollywood dance, street bazaars, fine art, dawn ragas, cinema, fashion, debates, masterclasses and daily performances by from some of India’s leading musicians and artists.
